About These Terms

These terms govern your use of the Refined Heart website at refinedheart.com, the Refined Heart mobile app, and our text message programme (together, the “Services”). By using the Services you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the Services.

Refined Heart is a non-profit religious and educational organisation based in Farmington Hills, Michigan. You can reach us at admin@refinedheart.com.

Using the Services

Our content is provided for personal, non-commercial religious and educational use. You may not copy, redistribute or resell it without our permission. Class and event registrations are subject to any additional terms stated at the point of registration.

Payments and Fees

Some of our programmes and events have a fee, which is shown at the point of registration. Fees are paid when you register and go towards the cost of running the programme.

Payments are handled by a third-party payment processor. Refined Heart does not receive or store your full card details.

If you need to cancel a registration, or something has gone wrong with a payment, please contact us at admin@refinedheart.com and we will sort it out with you.

Text Message Programme

Refined Heart operates a text message programme to share programme announcements, class and event reminders, registration links, and community updates with people who ask to receive them.

We use mobile numbers only to send these messages and to run the programmes you register for. We do not use them for advertising, and we do not sell, rent or share them with third parties for their own marketing purposes.

How to Join

You can join by giving us your mobile number and agreeing to receive text messages — on a registration or interest form, in the Refined Heart app, or in person at one of our programmes. We only send messages to numbers where consent has been given.

We often do need a phone number in order to register you for a programme — so that we can reach you about that programme, and for safety at events. Agreeing to receive our announcements and updates is separate, and is never a condition of registering for a programme, attending an event, donating, or using any other part of the Services. Giving us your number as part of a registration does not sign you up for text messages.

You must be 18 or older to sign up for text messages. We do not knowingly send text messages to children. Where a child is registered for one of our programmes, we communicate with their parent or guardian, not the child.

If you give us a number that is not yours, or you stop using a number you gave us, please let us know at admin@refinedheart.com so we can update our records.

Message Frequency

Message frequency varies with our programme calendar.

Cost

Message and data rates may apply, depending on your mobile plan. Refined Heart does not charge for text messages, but your carrier may. Check with your carrier if you are unsure what your plan includes.

How to Stop Messages

Reply STOP to any message from us and we will stop sending text messages to that number. You will receive one confirmation message and nothing after that.

You can also email admin@refinedheart.com to be removed.

Stopping text messages does not remove you from our email or postal mailing lists. Contact us if you would like to change those as well.

Reply HELP to any message from us for information about the programme and how to contact us, or email admin@refinedheart.com.

Delivery and Carriers

Text messages are delivered by mobile carriers over their networks, and delivery is not guaranteed. Carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages. Supported carriers may change without notice.

Privacy

Mobile numbers collected for the text message programme are handled as described in our Privacy Policy. We do not sell, rent, lease, or share mobile phone numbers, or any data collected as part of text message consent, with third parties or affiliates for their own marketing purposes.

Changes to These Terms

We may update these terms from time to time; the effective date above shows when they last changed. Continuing to use the Services after a change means you accept the updated terms.

Disclaimers

The Services are provided as they are, without warranties of any kind. To the fullest extent permitted by law, Refined Heart is not liable for any indirect or consequential loss arising from your use of the Services. These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Michigan.

Our team is led by Shaykh Ashhar. Shaykh Ashhar grew up in Troy, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit, where, in 1994, he completed the memorization of the Qur’an at eight years of age. He graduated high school in 2004 with an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma, and subsequently enrolled in the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor to complete a Bachelor’s of Science with a dual concentration in (1) Arabic & Islamic Studies and (2) Brain, Behavior, and Cognitive Sciences. He graduated from medical school at Michigan State University in 2012 and completed his medical residency in neurology, with a sub-specialization in migraine and facial pain, at the renowned Cleveland Clinic. He is currently a practicing neurologist in Detroit, Michigan, and, as a Clinical Associate Professor of Neurology, is heavily involved in medical student education and resident training. He has won numerous teaching awards in his career.

During his college years, Shaykh Ashhar began studying Classical Arabic, Fiqh and other Islamic sciences under local scholars, and sought spiritual guidance from Shaykh Husain Sattar. In 2008, he began formally studying the traditional sciences in the Sacred Learning Program, and in 2014, was granted formal authorization (ijāzah) in the spiritual sciences (tasawwuf). He currently resides in Farmington Hills, Michigan with his wife and four children. He spends his free time guiding others on the path of purifying the heart and attaining nearness to Allah ﷻ.
