Most people prepare resumes in life when attempting to earn a job or position they desire. They will dig deep into their past and mention all of their accomplishments and positive qualities, yet they will never include their negative qualities and failures. Similarly, the resume of every single human being is being written at every moment by the angels, and this resume, our book of deeds, includes everything good and everything bad. On the Day of Judgement when we receive this resume, it will be placed either in our right hand or left hand. As Allah ﷻ states in the Qur’an, “As for he who is given his record in his right hand, He will be judged with an easy account and return to his people in happiness.” Yet for the ones who don’t believe, Allah ﷻ states, “But as for he who is given his record behind his back, he will cry out for destruction, and burn in a blaze.” Aisha asked the Prophet ﷺ what an easy reckoning would be like on the Day of Judgment, and the Prophet ﷺ told her that an easy reckoning will be that Allah ﷻ overlooks the book of deeds entirely — for if the book is reviewed, the people will be at a loss. Allah ﷻ, from His mercy, has given us the opportunity in this life to adjust our resumes, through repenting for our sins. We must regularly ask Allah ﷻ for forgiveness in this life, and make a firm commitment moving forward to live a life that is pleasing to Him.
