Suhbah literally translates to company or companionship. In the context of spiritual progression, it means keeping good company that will allow one to remain firm on the deen. The Sahabah, or Companions of the Prophet ﷺ, are the best examples of the meaning of companionship. Despite being qualified and accomplished scholars, governors and warriors, what defines them is their companionship with the Prophet ﷺ. And this attribute alone of keeping the company of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, even for just a moment, is what allowed them to achieve the eternal pleasure of Allah ﷻ. This paradigm continues to be passed down generation to generation since the time of Prophet ﷺ — as believers, we must seek the company of the righteous in our communities. We should evaluate who we keep as our companions, whether it be physically or even virtually, recognizing that who and what we spend time with affects us, and impacts the development of our relationship with Allah ﷻ.
