When leaving the home:
بِسْمِ اللهِ، تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللهِ، وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللهِ
“In the name of Allah, I depend on Allah, and there is no power (to do good) or strength (to avoid evil) except with Allah.”
When we leave our homes on a daily basis, our hope is that it is for the pleasure of Allah ﷻ. With this du’a we remind ourselves that we are leaving the house for the sake of Allah ﷻ, and not for the purpose of any wrongdoing. We are encouraged to take the name of Allah ﷻ before the onset of any action, and leaving the house is no different.
We are wholly dependent on Allah ﷻ for everything. As we leave the home and recite the second segment of the du’a, we state that we place our full trust in Him, and whatever challenge is placed before us from here on, has been placed there by Allah ﷻ, and for our betterment.
The last segment of this du’a is stated in Hadith to be one of the treasures of Paradise. It affirms that the ultimate power is with Allah ﷻ. When we leave the home, we are usually in a struggle to either refrain from sin or trying to perform a good deed. Without the help of Allah ﷻ we would not be able to perform the good or refrain from the sin that we intend to. Therefore, we recite this supplication, beseeching His help.
