Anger is a flame that is taken from the blazing fire of Allah ﷻ that rises over the hearts. Breaking extreme anger is one of the most important matters of religion. We are told in the Hadith of the Prophet ﷺ that the strong individual is not the one who can out-wrestle another, but the one who can control himself when angry. Reasons for anger include pride and not recognizing that Allah ﷻ is in control of everything. Imam Ghazali states that anger is simply a person’s inability to accept the decision of Allah ﷺ over one’s own. Advice from the Hadith of the Prophet ﷺ on controlling oneself during a fit of anger includes: saying “I seek refuge in Allah from the cursed shaytaan”; to change one’s physical position (i.e. to sit down if standing, or to lie down if sitting); and to make wudu’.
