When an item in this life becomes bogged down with defects, it starts failing to fulfil its purpose. For example, when a computer becomes exposed through networks and subsequently infected with viruses, it no longer functions properly. When this occurs, the only option to restore the computer is by putting it through a “hard reset”, which restores it to its factory settings. As human beings, the more we interact with this worldly life, the more we allow ourselves to become hit with spiritual defects and viruses, until we also start failing to fulfil our purpose, which was to remember and worship Allah ﷻ. However, just as technology has an option to reset, the month of Ramadan is a tremendous mercy which affords us the opportunity to reset our lives as well, and restore us back to our original state.
